Can adenomyosis cause chemical pregnancies?

The short answer

Adenomyosis may contribute to chemical pregnancies (very early pregnancy loss) in some patients. It can change the uterine environment in ways that may affect implantation and early embryo development, but it is not necessarily the only or most common cause.

Adenomyosis can be associated with fertility challenges, and for some patients it may contribute to very early pregnancy loss (often called a chemical pregnancy). While we can’t say adenomyosis is the only or even the most common cause of a chemical pregnancy, it can change the uterine environment in ways that may interfere with implantation and early embryo development, including increased inflammation within the uterine muscle and altered uterine contractions.

It’s also common for adenomyosis to overlap with endometriosis, and that overlap can introduce additional factors that may affect implantation and early pregnancy. If you’re experiencing recurrent chemical pregnancies (especially alongside heavy bleeding, painful periods, or pelvic pain), our team can help you evaluate whether adenomyosis, endometriosis, or both may be part of the picture and what uterus-sparing options might make sense for your goals. You can learn more on our site or reach out to schedule a consultation so we can review your history and imaging and map out next steps.

Questions people ask next

All fertility questions
  • Can adenomyosis cause miscarriage?

Adenomyosis may contribute to miscarriage for some patients, but many people with adenomyosis have healthy pregnancies. Changes in the uterine muscle and environment may affect implantation and early placental development, and risk varies from person to person.

  • How does adenomyosis affect an IVF plan?

Adenomyosis can make implantation less predictable and increase the risk of certain pregnancy complications. IVF planning may include medical suppression before transfer and a frozen embryo transfer strategy, tailored to your symptoms, imaging findings, and prior IVF history.

  • Can focal adenomyosis affect fertility or miscarriage risk?

Yes, focal adenomyosis can affect fertility and miscarriage risk, especially when a lesion distorts the uterine cavity or interferes with implantation. Not all focal adenomyosis behaves the same: smaller nodules farther from the cavity may have less impact.

  • Does diffuse adenomyosis affect fertility and miscarriage risk?

Diffuse adenomyosis can affect fertility by changing uterine contractions and the environment where an embryo implants. For some patients, this can contribute to difficulty conceiving and may be associated with a higher risk of early miscarriage.
