Do I need contrast for an MRI, and is it safe?

For many pelvic MRIs—especially when we’re evaluating adenomyosis—contrast (gadolinium) often isn’t needed. It may be added when the radiologist needs extra detail or when there’s concern for other findings that can be better characterized with contrast.

Gadolinium contrast is considered safe for most people, particularly when kidney function is normal, which is why imaging centers screen for kidney disease beforehand. Pregnancy is typically treated as a precaution, so we coordinate carefully with you and the radiology team if you’re pregnant or could be. If you’re breastfeeding, current radiology guidance generally allows you to continue nursing after receiving gadolinium, and our team can help you feel confident about the plan for your specific situation.
