Bowel endometriosis vs IBS: what symptoms are different?

Diagnosisbowelpelvicabdominal

Symptoms that consistently flare with your menstrual cycle are a key clue that bowel endometriosis may be involved rather than IBS. Many patients describe painful bowel movements, deep rectal pressure or “stabbing” pain, and constipation and/or diarrhea that predictably worsens before or during a period.

Rectal bleeding that occurs specifically with menses is another red flag that deserves a focused endometriosis evaluation, since IBS does not cause cyclical bleeding. IBS symptoms often vary with diet, stress, and gut sensitivity, and while they can overlap with endometriosis, they typically aren’t tightly tied to your cycle. If your bowel symptoms are cyclic or accompanied by pelvic pain, our team can help clarify the cause and discuss whether targeted imaging and surgical planning are appropriate.
