Is hysterectomy the only cure for adenomyosis?

Deep Diseasepelvicabdominalsystemic

A hysterectomy is the only definitive cure for adenomyosis because it removes the uterus, where adenomyosis lives within the uterine muscle. This is different from endometriosis, which can persist outside the uterus even after hysterectomy. When adenomyosis is diffuse, it often spreads through the muscle in a “spiderweb” pattern, making it impossible to fully remove while leaving the uterus intact.

That said, many people aren’t looking for a cure right away—they’re looking for meaningful symptom control or to preserve fertility. In select cases where adenomyosis is more localized (an adenomyoma), a targeted surgical removal may be considered, but it requires careful imaging review and expert judgment about expected benefit, bleeding risk, and future pregnancy considerations. If you’re weighing these options, our team can help you understand what type of adenomyosis you may have and what approaches are most realistic for your goals.
