Does an ovarian cystectomy remove the ovary?
Usually not. In an ovarian cystectomy, our goal is to remove the cyst wall while preserving as much healthy ovarian tissue as possible, so the ovary can keep functioning.
In a small number of cases, the plan can change if the ovary is severely damaged, the cyst has significantly compromised blood flow (such as with torsion), or the findings raise concern for something other than a benign cyst. We review these possibilities with you ahead of time so you understand the range of outcomes, and we tailor the surgical approach to your safety and long-term ovarian health.
