Can imaging detect diaphragm or chest endometriosis?
The short answer
Sometimes imaging can suggest endometriosis on the diaphragm or in the chest, but normal imaging doesn’t rule it out. Even MRI can miss small or superficial lesions, though imaging can help map other potential causes of chest symptoms and support surgical planning when suspicion is high.
Sometimes imaging can suggest endometriosis on the diaphragm or in the chest, but normal imaging doesn’t rule it out. Ultrasound works well for many pelvic findings but often can’t visualize diaphragm disease clearly, and even MRI can miss lesions, especially smaller, superficial, or thin implants.
Even when it doesn’t show endometriosis directly, imaging can still help map other potential causes of chest symptoms and support surgical planning when suspicion is high. Questions people ask next
All deep disease questionsWhat tests diagnose thoracic or diaphragmatic endometriosis?
Surgical visualization with biopsy is the most definitive way to confirm thoracic or diaphragmatic endometriosis. Diagnosis usually starts with symptom history, and MRI or CT may help, but normal scans don’t rule it out because small implants can be missed.
How is diaphragmatic endometriosis diagnosed?
The most reliable way to diagnose diaphragmatic endometriosis is minimally invasive surgery to inspect the diaphragm and remove suspicious lesions for pathology when appropriate. Imaging can help guide evaluation, but a normal scan does not rule it out.
Can a chest CT miss thoracic endometriosis?
Yes, a chest CT can miss thoracic endometriosis because many implants are small, superficial, or blend in with normal tissue. Normal imaging doesn’t rule it out when chest or shoulder pain, shortness of breath, or other symptoms predictably flare around menstruation.
Why is diaphragmatic endometriosis often found only during surgery?
Diaphragmatic endometriosis is frequently missed before surgery because standard exams and imaging focus on the pelvis, and some lesions are hard to see. Surgery allows direct inspection of the diaphragm, which can reveal implants that scans miss.
