General
What should I eat during a flare with pain, nausea, or diarrhea?
The short answer
During a flare, we generally recommend small, simple meals with soft, cooked foods like broth-based soups, oatmeal, rice or scrambled eggs. Sipping fluids with electrolytes can help you stay hydrated, and temporarily limiting raw roughage, high-fat meals and very spicy foods can help.
During a flare with pelvic pain, nausea, or diarrhea, we generally recommend keeping meals small, simple, and easy to digest. Soft, cooked foods like broth-based soups, oatmeal, rice, scrambled eggs, poached fish or tofu, and stewed fruit are often better tolerated than heavy or complex meals. Sipping fluids regularly, especially those with electrolytes, can help you stay hydrated when your appetite is low or your stools are loose.
For many patients, symptoms worsen with raw roughage, high-fat meals, and very spicy foods, so it can help to cut back on those temporarily until things settle. Once the flare eases, you can gradually reintroduce a wider range of foods and watch for patterns that reliably trigger symptoms. If bowel symptoms are frequent or escalating, our team can help evaluate whether endometriosis, adenomyosis, or overlapping gastrointestinal conditions could be contributing, and discuss a plan that fits your day-to-day life.

Questions people ask next
All general questionsWhat safely helps constipation or diarrhea during flares?
For constipation flares, hydration and gentle stool softening are the safest starting points; for diarrhea, a short course of loperamide may reduce urgency, and oral rehydration can help. Sudden severe symptoms, blood in stool, black/tarry stools, fever, or ongoing weight loss need prompt evaluation.
Diet and self-care tips for bowel endometriosis flares?
A consistent anti-inflammatory eating pattern can help calm bowel endometriosis flares, but fiber needs vary. Track food and symptom patterns, change one thing at a time, and use gentle heat, rest breaks, and paced activity during flares.
Can foods worsen endometriosis symptoms?
Yes, certain foods can worsen endometriosis symptoms for some people, but there is no universal endometriosis diet. Eating patterns that increase inflammation or trigger gut symptoms can amplify pain, bloating, and fatigue.
Are low-FODMAP or low-histamine diets helpful for endometriosis?
Low-FODMAP and low-histamine diets can be useful for a subset of patients, especially with IBS-type symptoms or a strong pattern suggesting histamine sensitivity. They don’t treat endometriosis lesions and are generally viewed as short-term trials with stepwise food reintroduction.
